Science Laboratory Rules and Regulations Agreement
Between Soochow University High School and the Sino-Canada Program
In order to promote the educational development of Sin-Canada Program and to standardize laboratory practices, we here develop the rules and regulations for using the facilities and equipment in the science laboratories of Soochow University High School, based on mutual agreement on both sides:
1. All the teachers (Canadian teachers included) and students shall obey the rules and regulations of Soochow University High School (listed below), and shall follow additional rules for specific situation or settings at all times in carrying out activities or investigations.
2. Biology Laboratory ： The Biology laboratory is located on the 5 th floor of the Creativity Center. Please contact the lab assistant Ms. Hu Chengpei for lab equipment. If the Canadian teacher borrows equipment, a Sino-Canada Head Teacher who can translate shall be present and shall sign a borrowing application form. (The Head Teacher shall be responsible for safe-keeping, borrowing and returning the equipment. In order to ensure available equipment for other classes, the equipment shall be borrowed for one week or less, but it can be renewed without limit.
3. Physics Laboratory: The Physics laboratory is located on the 5 th floor of Creativity Center. The lab assistant is Ms. Yuan Yan. The same rules and regulations for the Biology Lab are applied for the Physics Lab.
4. Chemistry Laboratory ： The Chemistry laboratory is located on the 1 st floor of the Laboratory Building. The lab assistant is Ms. Cai Meisheng. Canadian teachers shall prepare the chemicals and equipment needed before classes, accompanied by a Sino-Canada Head Teacher who can translate. Miss Cai is not a professional and can only assist Canadian teachers, who are responsible for the whole teaching process, for preparation and during the lab experiment.
5. Teachers and students from the Sino-Canadian Program shall use the lab equipment and expendable experimental resources for free, but any equipment and chemicals for particular experiments will have to be purchased by themselves.
6. Please contact the School Clinic (1 st floor on the east of the Administrative Building; Tel: 6252 2703) in case of any accident.
7. Guidelines for Canadian Teachers:
· Teachers are advised to check well ahead if considering using equipment, to make sure that it is in good working condition
· Lab assistants will get equipment/glassware out for a laboratory period, but students may be asked to put it away; teachers must stay there with the assistant to make sure it has been completed before the lab period
· Chemicals for the Chemistry lab are stored on 1 st floor; for the Biology lab, on 5 th floor. The classroom teacher will make up chemical solutions ahead of time, in the chemical preparation room; the teacher can set up a suitable time with the lab assistant, who is always there
· Students may use equipment only when in the laboratories (not in classrooms)
· In the laboratories, one piece of equipment will be provided for every student, when possible
· Students will pay for any equipment damaged during a lab; there is a form that the student fills out and gives to the assistant; another person arranges the payment
· Some safety equipment is available: fire blanket, fire extinguisher, water, school clinic. Other safety equipment required by the Nova Scotia program (e.g., eye wash stations, aprons, nitril gloves) will have to be purchased by the Sino-Canada program.
· Teachers may borrow one piece of any equipment to bring to the classroom for demonstrations
Standards of Conduct in Laboratories, Soochow University High School
1. Please keep the lab clean and quiet.
2. Please inform students of the above rules and regulation before the experiment.
3. Teachers shall introduce to the students the experiment content, purpose and procedure in advance.
1. Get prepared before classes, and sit at the designated seat.
2. Check the chemicals and equipment before experiments. Students are not allowed to exchange chemicals or equipment with each other unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Please report to the teacher immediately if an accident happens.
3. Follow the instructions carefully during the experiment. Take notes and finish the experiment report afterwards.
4. Take care of the equipment and don’t waste chemicals. Damage and missing equipment caused by violations against the instructions shall be paid for by the student.
5. Clean the equipment and keep the room tidy when the experiment is done. Leave with teacher’s permission.
Rules and Regulation on Borrowing and Returning Equipment
1. Please register at least one week ahead to borrow any lab equipment.
2. Equipment shall not be taken out of the school without the principle’s signature.
3. Lab assistants are responsible for taking back the borrowed equipment in time.
4. Check to see if there is any damage when returning equipment and arrange payment accordingly.

Canadian Teachers - Process to Follow in Applying to Use Science Lab Facilities/Equipment
1. More than a week before you want them, check to see whether the lab equipment/ chemicals you would need are available. In the case of Chemistry, you can have the Head teacher check the online list. For Physics or Biology, there are no paper lists; you should have the Head teacher make an appointment for you and her to meet with the lab assistant in order to see if the equipment is there, in what numbers, and whether it is in working condition.
2. Once you know that the equipment/chemicals are available and working, apply to use them and/or the lab facilities. Fill out the Request Form and give it to the Head Teacher to use in making the request. In the case of Chemistry, the Head Teacher will apply online. In the case of Physics or Biology, she will translate the form into Mandarin and take it to the appropriate lab assistant. Please get your request form back from the Head Teacher and use it to fill in the bottom section as the process develops.
3. Wait for permission to use the lab and equipment.
4. Once you have permission, make an appointment for you and the Head Teacher to meet again with the lab assistant. At this meeting, clarify
a. who will prepare what before an experiment, and when
b. where pre-mixed chemicals will be stored
c. how cleanup will take place
5. If something happens to delay or change your arranged-for date, be sure to have the Head Teacher notify the lab assistant right away.
6. Use the equipment and/or conduct your labs planned. Fill out the bottom of the Request Form and give it to the Canadian Principal.
